Debt Validation vs. Debt Verification (They’re Not the Same)
Updated October 26, 2025
Straight talk: People mix these up constantly. Validation refers to the collector’s duty under the FDCPA upon dispute. Verification is often used by credit bureaus under the FCRA. Similar words, different playbooks.
Quick table
- Validation (FDCPA): Triggered by a timely dispute; collector must provide information about the debt.
- Verification (FCRA): Bureau investigates a credit report dispute with the furnisher.
What to expect
Timelines differ, evidence differs, and who must respond differs. Ask for the right thing or you’ll get the wrong process.
